Teaching English and Languages in Tanzania

Children at primary schools in Tanzania are taught in Swahili but are then taught in English at secondary and post secondary education. As most children speak Swahili at home too it is incredibly important that they learn English before they get to secondary school or they will really struggle in their future education. Therefore, primary schools in Tanzania are very keen to have good English speakers help them teach English to their children.

Our teaching projects in Tanzania are based at two primary schools in Arusha. Both schools struggle to recruit good English teachers. This is where you can help. You can choose to work with the very young children at the pre-school or nursery departments of the schools or older children in the primary and junior departments.

Your main role will be to help with the teaching of English, most notably spoken English. The schools also dedicate Friday afternoons to sports if you are interested in helping coach football, swimming or athletics they would be very grateful for your help.

The schools are open during term time between January and March, May and July and September and November. Outside these dates the schools will be closed but volunteers are still welcome to come and help in local orphanages or teach in vacation classes.

Dates

The school terms are listed below. We recommend that you should aim to arrive during the school term although you can help teach vacation classes or in the local orphanage during the holidays.

January – March
April – July
September – November

Note all projects working with children require a background check. This is an extra cost of about £10 but we will make the necessary arrangements. Parking tickets, speeding fines, and some criminal convictions will not prevent you from joining us; we simply check if you have any prior convictions relating to harming children.

All costs shown above are for one month. Additional months can be added for £495.

You choose your dates for teaching, orphanage, journalism and medical placements but spaces throughout the year are limited so reserve your space now.
