The journalism projects in India are based in the beautiful state of Kerala on the south west tip of India. India is an absolutely immense country that covers not only a wide geographical area but also a broad range of cultures, religion and peoples. As a result English is one of the many national languages, as well as the numerous regional and cultural dialects. This means that most of the media is produced in English.
The English language press in India has a reputation for quality. Some of the best respected newspapers in the world are produced in India. The reputation for quality journalism means that it comes as no surprise that India boasts some of the best training for journalists in the world.
The journalism projects in India are operated under the supervision of a local journalist in Trivandrum. When you join we will ask you to submit a CV detailing any experience that you have and any examples of your work. This helps us to establish what level you are currently at. The programme is then tailored to your interests and experience.
If you’ve had little or no previous experience we’ll start by teaching you some of the basics. This may include how to use the various software programmes like Quark express for page layout, advanced English or interview techniques and some of the restrictions placed on journalists in Kerala. Once you have completed this basic training, which is usually completed at the local journalism institute or by local journalists, you will then be allocated assignment at various magazines and newspapers. These assignments will depend on your interests and the time you have with us.
The programme is very much tailored to your interests and experience. Those with previous experience and/or formal media training will spend less time on the basics and more time on assignment at our various partner publications.
The programme is not limited to print journalism. Opportunities also exist in broadcast media at the local TV and radio stations based in Trivandrum. These placements are again tailored to your interests and experience so contact us to discuss the options.
You choose your start date but spaces throughout the year are limited so reserve your space now.
