HIV Orphanage and Awareness Project – Uganda

We work with an AIDS orphanage near Masaka in Uganda. The parents of the children at the orphanage have died from AIDS or AIDS related illnesses and as a consequence, most of the children, if not all, are HIV positive.

The children need to visit the hospital on a regular basis, firstly for tests to see if they are HIV positive and then to check that they are on the right combination of retro-viral drugs that will extend their life expectancy.

It’s a long journey to the hospital and drug regimes have to be tried and tested, so they often have to make repeat visits. Your job will be to accompany the children on their many visits to the hospital which can be a frightening experience for the very small ones.

In addition to the regular hospital visits, you will also spend time working in the local community with school, youth and high risk groups. Not only will you be helping to increase awareness of how HIV is transmitted and therefore helping to reduce their exposure to infection, you will also help to dispel some of the myths surrounding the pandemic and helping to break down some of the barriers that exist in the community against people who are living with HIV and AIDS.

This project is ideal for someone already on our medical or orphanage project in Uganda and can be easily combined.
