Our partner schools in Ghana are located in and around Cape Coast. Most of these schools are private schools, but they certainly don’t compare with the elite private schools in our home countries. Most Ghanaian families send their children to private schools, saving what they can to pay for their children’s education. If money is tight it is common for only one child to be educated, often the male child. In some cases Ghanaian families send their children to more affluent family members to work as a house boy or girl in return for funding the child’s education. This really does underline how important education is to Ghanaian families.
Even though most of the schools are privately funded, this does not mean that they are well resourced and class sizes are often 40 plus. Therefore, you will find that you can help reduce the workload on the teacher by taking out small groups of children, working with those who are struggling and need a bit of extra help or working with the bright children who need to be pushed further.
Ghana is already an English speaking country and all lessons are taught in English. However, the Ghanaian dialect is often difficult to understand so here our teachers work on helping teach spoken English, pronunciation, silent letters etc.
Schools here are also keen to have people who want to help teach art, music, drama and sports.
Note all projects working with children require a background check. This is an extra cost of about £10 but we will make the necessary arrangements. Parking tickets, speeding fines, and some criminal convictions will not prevent you from joining us; we simply check if you have any prior convictions relating to harming children.
All costs shown above are for one month. Additional months can be added for £495.
You choose your dates for teaching, orphanage, journalism and medical placements but spaces throughout the year are limited so reserve your space now.
