Teaching English and Languages in Tanzania
In Tanzania we work with an NGO committed to providing continuing
education in a rural community outside Dar es Salaam. The aim of
the NGO is to reduce drug abuse and the transmission of HIV / AIDS
by actively engaging young people in the community and helping them
to gain vocational skills that will improve their employment prospects
and take them away from illegal and risky behaviour.
The NGO runs an educational centre which teaches language and
vocational skills. Although English is a national language, most
Tanzanians speak their own dialect first and then Swahili. English
is very much comes third. However, as in most countries, tourism
is vitally important to the economy of Tanzania, particularly when
you live near such tourist attractions as Mounts Meru and Kilimanjaro.
Therefore a good understanding of English will mean access to more
jobs and more opportunities.
In addition to English, they are particularly interested in having
people who can also teach German, Spanish, French and Chinese.
You will be mainly working as a teaching assistant, taking out
small groups of young people and working with them to improve their
English pronunciation and understanding. Resources will be limited,
so we recommend taking out lots of magazines and brochures. For
example a simple travel brochure can be used for lots of different
lessons on the weather, seasons, geography and role playing.
