Teaching in Tanzania
All our teaching placements in Tanzania are in the foothills of
Mounts Meru and Kilimanjaro, and the setting is just perfect. You
will be working in schools in rural settings. Often in rural areas,
schools have problems recruiting enough teachers for every class,
so age groups are mixed and classes can be in excess of 40 or 50
pupils.
Although English is a national language, it is very much second
to their local dialect. Most Tanzanians speak their own dialect
first and then Swahili. English is very much a third language. However,
as in most countries, tourism is vitally important to the economy
of Tanzania, particularly when you live near such tourist attractions
as Mounts Meru and Kilimanjaro, and therefore a good understanding
of English will mean access to more jobs and more opportunities.
You will be mainly working as a teaching assistant, taking out
small groups of children and working with them to improve their
English pronunciation and understanding. Resources will be limited,
so we recommend taking out lots of magazines and brochures. For
example a simple travel brochure can be used for lots of different
lessons on the weather, seasons, geography and role playing.
