Teaching in Mali
You will be teaching in primary and secondary schools in Bamako.
If you have a preference for either age groups then do let us know.
Despite being culturally rich and the site of one of the oldest
civilistaions in history, Mali is still a very poor country. Despite
this very few state sponsored schools exist and so most children
go to fee paying schools. These schools are nothing like the elite
fee paying schools that we are used to at home. Often, families
will save all they can to send their children to school.
Mali is a French speaking country but most people will speak their
own tribal language first. All lessons are conducted in French and
so this means that although this is a great place to improve your
French, you will come home with a strange accent, French with a
strong West African accent!
Mali was once a great centre for global trade and was the gateway
for the lucrative trade routes across the Sahara. Even today, most
business is focussed towards the global economy and so a working
knowledge of English is essential of you want to get a good job.
Your job will be to work as a language assistant, working with
small groups of children to improve their English speaking and listening
skills.
The ability to talk about football is an absolute requirement for
all looking to teach in soccer mad Mali!
