Reforestation and Environmental awareness project in Tanzania
Deforestation is a huge problem in Northern Tanzania. The forests are under intense pressure due to the high price of timber, increased use of firewood in cooking and the the increasing commercial nature of farming in Tanzania, particularly for cash crops like coffee.
The region's most famous landmark, Mount Kilimanjaro, has seen some of the most acute effects. Global warming, illegal logging and forest fires have greatly reduced the mountain's forest cover and are believed to be one of the major causes of the retreat of the ice that caps the mountain top. It is feared that the snowy peak of Mount Kilimanjaro is soon to disappear unless drastic action is taken.
While afforestation is one solution, the long term aim is also to promote environmental education in the region.
Your role is to work with schools groups in Arusha to plant seedlings in areas of acute deforestation. In addition to afforestation (albeit on a small scale), one of your objectives is to also increase environmental education amongst school children in Arusha and the nomadic people of Northern Tanzania such as the Maasai, Tindiga and Hadzabe. Part of this is not only planting the saplings but also encouraging the use of alternative fuels in cooking.
In addition to promoting environmental education in schools, you will also take part on a weekly environmental Education awareness program on the regional radio station. Local people will have the opportunity to phone in to discuss the issues and find out more about alternative sources of fuel.
