HIV Awareness and Counselling Project

The HIV awareness programme in Tanzania is based at the HIV department of a hospital in Arusha. Initially you will shadow a counsellor, learning about HIV and AIDS and observing and receiving instruction in how to perform HIV testing. You will gain practical experience of how the patients are counselled before and post test, how to deliver results, follow up and referral for medication. You will also learn about the management and treatment protocols for HIV and how they are put into practice.

Once you have completed your initial period of instruction you will play an active role in testing patients, giving them results and their subsequent counselling. Part of your role will also include visiting patients at home to give results and to follow up on treatment.

You will also visits local schools and youth institutions once or twice a week to increase awareness of how HIV is transmitted and look at ways they can reduce their exposure to infection. This includes one on one time with children, students and staff.

Standard hours for the program will be Monday to Friday 8am until 3pm although these will be flexible and likely to be varied on days spent outside the health centre.

This project is a good opportunity for budding medical students to learn more about HIV or for those looking to gain experience in counselling.

Experienced counsellors or youth workers are also encouraged to apply for this programme.
